Ink Cartridge Savings
Ink cartridges for the major brands of printers, such as HP, Epson, Canon and others, are considered by many to be very expensive. This has given rise to a variety of companies offering compatible ink cartridges at a fraction of the cost of a new major brand cartridge.
These compatible off-brand cartridges often, but not always, match the original in quality while saving money for the consumer. An additional alternative is the use of a continuous ink system (CIS) utilizing ink tanks connected to the printer via small tubing. A CIS also requires certain modifications to the printer which some find unacceptable. Another problem with CIS is the lower quality of ink, which will not only eventually damage the printer, but is also a much lower quality.
However, some find they can save enough money on compatible ink cartridges to justify paying for a new printer.
Comparing the cost of a new printer with the cost of brand name ink often surprises many consumers. It's a well-known "secret" that the major printer manufacturers - Hewlett Packard, Lexmark, Dell, Canon, Epson and Brother - will sell their printers at a break-even price, or sometimes below cost, with the knowledge they will more than make up the difference in selling replacement ink cartridges. Some manufacturers have even attempted various methods of preventing the use of alternate ink cartridges in their machines with different levels of success.
Kodak, a late entrant into printers, is attempting to change that practice by offering individual ink cartridges for their EasyShare inkjet printers at a lower cost. However, it may be some time before the entire industry follows suit, which means cheaper compatible ink cartridges will remain a viable alternative for some time.
